Dog show quickly gaining elite status

The American Kennel Club/Eukanuba dog show and performance event is becoming the creme de la creme of canine sporting events.

The venerable Westminster Kennel Club, observing its 129th annual show Feb. 14-15, was the first to require that all competitors be AKC champions. The top five champions of record in each breed, based on number of dogs defeated at shows, are invited to compete at Westminster. When that quota is filled, owners of lesser-ranked champions might try for one of the remaining spots.
